NEWI
Cup
Wales win 1st NEWI Cup |
On
Saturday 30th June Wales hosted England A at the official opening
of the new water-based facility at NEWI, Wrexham. Funded jointly
by NEWI and Sports Council for Wales,
the facility completes the Regional Centre network for the Welsh
Hockey Union and will provide an excellent opportunity for the
sport to be further developed in North Wales.
The official opening was conducted
by Lesley Griffiths (AM), Ian Lucas (MP) and Prof. Mike Scott
with Eleanor Burnham (AM) making a presentation to Zak Jones to
commemorate
his 100th Welsh Cap.

In
the match itself, Wales took the game to England and were unfortunate
in finding the English goalkeeper in good form. A number of penalty
corners were awarded in Wales favour and only goal-liner clearances
prevented them from taking the lead. Huw Jones, however took matters
into his own hands and following a fine individual run shot low
into the bottom corner
to give Wales a deserved lead. Wales’ goalkeeper George Harris was
called upon a number of times as England looked for the equalising
goal. An element of poor discipline cost Wales dear however as right
on half time, a free hit inside Wales’ 23 was upgraded to a short
corner and from the resultant shot, a foot on the line saw the penalty
stroke awarded being duly dispatched by Adam Dixon.
|
The
second half saw both teams coming close to scoring again and in
a fast and furious match both teams were reduced to 10 men at various
times. No further goals were scored and with the winners being awarded
the NEWI Cup on a count back of penalty corners gained, it was Wales
who won the trophy. Click on image to
